“MBCT fosters awareness of patterns in our mind and body and helps us
identify the signs of oncoming depression so that we can ward off the episode before it starts”
MBCT is a course designed specifically to help people who are prone to recurring depression. It can enable people to change the way they think and feel about their experiences, and better manage emotional responses to life’s challenges.
Mindfulness is a mind-body approach using meditation, breathing exercises and stretching. MBCT combines mindfulness with elements from Cognitive Therapy to help break negative or unhelpful thought patterns, and to increase awareness of traps in our thinking. MBCT fosters a calm, non-judgemental approach to difficult thoughts and feelings, in order to develop lasting resilience.
What does an MBCT Course Involve?
MBCT is delivered by two fully-trained therapists in a group of 10-16 people meeting for a weekly 2 hour class over 8 weeks – a total of 16 hours of therapist contact, but at a fraction of the cost of individual sessions. Each participant has an individual assessment before starting, and there is an optional follow up session at 3 months. Each class is organised around a theme that is explored through both group inquiry and mindfulness practice. At each session clients have the opportunity to talk about their experiences with their home practise, the obstacles that inevitably arise, and how to deal with them, without judgement or self-criticism.
Who is MBCT suitable for?
MBCT has proven efficacy for people who have a history of recurrent depression but are currently well and wanting to find ways of preventing relapse. Mindfulness can also be effective in helping people cope with:
- Pain management
- Weight management
- Sleep difficulties
- Low self-esteem
